Your Guide to Identifying Signs of Gum Disease for National Gum Care Month

Dr. William Gielincki, Jr. and our staff have seen many instances of gum disease in Jacksonville, FL. Seeking treatment as early as possible can help reverse the effects of gum disease and prevent it from advancing into severe periodontitis. That is why it is advisable to check for periodontal disease during your home oral health care routine and schedule appointments with professional prosthodontists at least twice a year for routine checkups. Since September is National Gum Care Month, now is a great time to start becoming proactive toward your gum health.

What You Can Do

Ideally, you should be brushing your teeth twice a day. If anything feels out of the ordinary, then you need to take those changes seriously. For example, if your gums hurt while you are brushing, then something may be wrong. Lightly bleeding gums after bushing or flossing may be normal, if it happens very rarely. This can happen when you change your routine because it may irritate the gums. However, consistent pain or bleeding is never normal, and an appointment with a prosthodontist should be scheduled promptly. Another good idea is to visually inspect your gums on your own every so often. During these inspections, see if the gum tissue has receded at all. You can also check to see if there are any sores in your mouth, which is another indication of periodontal disease.

What a Prosthodontist Can Do

Having one of these symptoms may not necessarily indicate the presence of gum disease. One of our prosthodontists will inspect your oral structures by taking X-rays to see if the jaw bone is still healthy. Your gums will also be measured to check for recession or pockets. If these pockets are greater than three millimeters in depth, then that means the disease has progressed to an advanced stage.
